Jesus continues his angry sermon towards the religious leaders. Now he picks on their giving.
1. Giving isn’t what Jesus is looking for.
The religious leaders were awesome givers. They tithed on their spice rack! BTW…don’t bring any spices in on Sunday for the offering…our counters would have no idea what to do with that!
But these guys were straining out a gnat from their drink and swallowing a camel. They were focusing on the little stuff and ignoring the “weightier” matters.
2. Jesus is looking for our heart.
Jesus wants them to keep giving, but to do so with justice, mercy & faithfulness.
- Justice = Balancing the scales.
- Mercy = Having compassion to balance the scales.
- Faithfulness = Having the longevity to see it through.
Giving that Jesus is talking about is a matter of the heart. You cannot accomplish these 3 without having a heart for it.
We can give out of spiritual pride. Where we get something out of our giving.
Or we can give so that those who cannot or will not give receive help.
This is the Kingdom way.
