The Father of Faith

This “righteousness by faith alone” thing wasn’t a New Testament concept. It started from the very beginning…all the way back to Father Abraham.

1. Abraham believed by faith before the law.

Abraham believed in God in Genesis 12. God gave Moses the 10 Commandments in Exodus 20.

Several hundred years had passed (maybe upto a 1,000) between God’s statement of faith and then the law.

This is the tone God was setting.

2. God deposited righteousness into Abraham’s account.

“Abraham believed God and it was counted to him (credited to him) as righteousness.”

We are bankrupt when it comes to righteousness. When we believe Jesus lived, died & rose again to rescue us from our bankruptcy and come to faith in him, God wipes the slate clean and deposits Jesus’ righteousness into our account.

Morally, that’s like being in bankruptcy court & Donald Trump comes in and gives you all of his net worth. Except that Trump’s riches are seemingly endless…and Jesus’ righteousness it literally is endless.

3. God did this strategically.

God’s advance planning is absolutely brillant.

He called the “Gentile” Abraham from his life of idolatry into a Hear & Follow relationship.

Then God told Abraham that he would bless all nations through him.

Setting the stage for all people to be able to be blessed through the seed of Abraham…Jesus.

Works do not work. God started showing us this in Genesis. If Father Abraham is truly our father…he is by a Hear & Follow faith in God.

BTW…we also know that Abraham was far from perfect after being given righteousness…but God never pulled the plug on him!
